My Bustling Backyard

Location: Millgrove, Canada

My backyard is a busy place. At first glance, it seems empty. But the more I look, the more I see. Normally, I would travel somewhere away from home to find some interesting animals to add to my photo collection, but this year, I found many more interesting creatures in my backyard than I could have imagined.

The Porch

The most common sightings near my backdoor are definitely the flies. The annoying little pests that stop at nothing to bother humans. I would classify them as the most annoying insects in the world. They land on you. They buzz in your ear. They land on you again. They dodge your swatters. Then they land on you again, and again, and again.

The Garden

Butterflies and bees both love flowers, and they do not have any trouble sharing.

Near the Pool

On a hot summer’s day, most of the water has been dried up by the intense heat, leaving the pool in the middle of my lawn a popular place for the animals outside. Frogs and toads frequently have to be rescued from the chlorinated water. And for some reason, the big-headed scarite beetles love to take swims as well. The spiders, on the other hand, like to show of their special water-walking ability.

The Black Horse Fly is a biting fly, kind of like a mosquito, except bigger. Much bigger. I’m glad I didn’t get bit.

The Tall Grass

I do not venture to the depths of my backyard often, but when I do, I am always surprised by the number of bugs I find living in the bushes and trees.
